May 15, 2019 Field Trip to Sutcliffe Farms, 8:00am
Meet at tennis parking lot at 8 am. Arrive at Sutcliffe’s at 9 am. We’ll probably spend about 1 1/2 hours viewing all of the animals.
Sutcliffe Farm is a true refuge—a serene island sanctuary where animals of all shapes and sizes are kept safe, clean, healthy, and most of all, happy. Sutcliffe Farm is home to more than 70 domestic, wild, and even exotic animals. Terry and Lanie Sutcliffe welcome the CIPC to their farm. Optionally, you can bring carrots or apples for the animals.

May 23, 2019 Swan Lake / Sumter Iris Festival, Sumter SC, 7:30am
We’ve set the date for our field trip to the Sumter Iris Festival. It will be Thursday, May 23. We will car pool from our Tennis Court parking lot, leaving promptly at 7:30 am for the two hour drive. We will plan to stay at the gardens until at least after lunch. There is a cafe on site, and I suggest we eat our lunch there. The cafe is open from 11 am - 2 pm. Should you be in a car pool that wishes to stay later you are of course free to do that.
Mike has kindly contacted a friend who lives in Sumter who tells us that the iris should be blooming that day. And we are going on the Thursday before Memorial Day, which is the beginning of the Sumter Iris Festival. There will be huge crowds during the festival, so that is why we’re going ahead of time!
DISCLAIMER: This is one location I have not been to previously. All of my information is coming from the website. Admission and parking is FREE.
Address: Swan Lake Iris Gardens, 822 W. Liberty Street, Sumter, SC Hours Open: 7:30 am to Dusk
Visitor Center - 8:30am-5 pm
What you can expect:
- Black waters of Swan Lake
- Lake dotted with colorful islands, and abundant wildlife
- Swan Lake is the only public park in the US to feature all eight swan species
Some history from the website:
“Swan Lake Iris Gardens began in 1927 as a private fishing retreat for Hamilton Carr Bland, a local businessman. At the same time he was developing the 30 acres of swamp on what is now the north side of West Liberty Street, he was landscaping the grounds of his home with Japanese iris. They failed miserably, and after consulting expert horticulturists from as far away as New York, he ordered his gardener to dig up the bulbs and dump them at the swamp. The following spring, they burst into bloom. The accidental garden, referred to by Southern Living magazine a “lovely mistake,” has since been developed into one of the finest botanical gardens in the United States.”
Let me know via email if you would like to come, and whether you are able to drive or would prefer to be a passenger. Please RSVP by MAY 11 to email@example.com

June 14-15, 2019 Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC
Several of us are planning an overnight trip to Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet (south of Myrtle Beach) on June 14-15, 2019. We hope you would consider joining us. These lovely gardens contain hundreds of sculptures as well as formal gardens. The sculptures are both large scale and small, primarily from the 19th and 20th centuries. Also on the grounds is a small zoo, an enclosed aviary, a butterfly garden, gift shop, and restaurant.
Plans are to leave around 9 am on Friday June 14 for the three hour drive. We will eat lunch on the grounds, stay for most of the afternoon, and then possibly head across the highway to the Huntington Beach State Park for a look at those grounds and ocean. The motel we have selected is in Georgetown, about 18 miles south of the gardens. It is the Baymont Inn and Suites (around $120 or so +tax) near the Georgetown Marina. Address: 120 Church Street. Phone 843-485-0828. We will have dinner in Georgetown (there are several great choices). Sat. morning we will head back to the Gardens and be the first in line to enter the Butterfly Garden (small extra charge for this), where we’ll stay photographing for 30 minutes. After that we’ll do whatever we choose - back into the gardens, go to the zoo, back to the ocean, etc. There are many choices.
On our way home we recommend stopping for lunch at T.W. Graham in McClellanville, a quaint little historic town north of Charleston. But everyone is free to choose where to eat.
Cost: Tickets to the gardens are $16 each for Seniors 65 & over, or $18 for Adults. Tickets are good for 7 days.
There will be a small cost to enter the State Park unless you already have a pass for 2019.
Please let me know ASAP (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you are interested in this trip or if you have any questions. Here is the link to the website for the gardens if you would like a sneak preview: www.brookgreen.org
